How to Make Chile Con Queso (step-by-step)
1. Gather your ingredients. You'll need La Terra Fina Queso Cheese Dip, no bean chili and shredded cheddar cheese.
2. Add the no bean chili to a medium sized sauce pan or skillet.
3. Add in the La Terra Fina Queso Cheese.
4. Heat until bubbly, stirring frequently to prevent boiling.
5. Once the chili and the La Terra Fina Queso Cheese are hot, add in the freshly grated cheese; stir until melted.
6. Serve with tortilla chips & enjoy!
Why should I use freshly grated cheese?
- Freshly grated cheese is preferred because pre-shredded cheese is typically coated with a cellulose, which is essentially saw dust! It's added in order to help reduce the pieces of cheese from sticking together. When you grate your cheese on the spot, you eliminate the need for additives.Cellulose can also result in cheese not melting quite as smoothly in that ooey-gooey perfection that only freshly grated cheese can achieve.
Finally, freshly grated cheese is.. well.. fresh! There's just something special about the taste of cheese that just came off of the block.
What is Chile Con Queso?
- "Chile con queso, sometimes described simply as queso, is an appetizer or side dish of melted cheese, or more usually, a pasteurized processed cheese food product such as Velveeta, and chili pepper typically served in Tex-Mex restaurants as a dip for tortilla chips." Wikipedia If you want to break it down even more simply, it's chili, with cheese!
Can I used processed cheese in this recipe?
- I wouldn't ever recommend process cheese. First of all, I just don't feel that you can replicate the melt-in-your-mouth texture and flavor of the real deal – all natural cheese.
- It's also worth noting that processed cheeses often contain additives, fillers, and even synthetic ingredients. Real cheese has been around for a long, long time and has stood the test of time. Here's a great article about the primary differences between processed cheese and real cheese.
What's the best way to serve Chile Con Queso?
- For events like a super bowl party this dish is great served in a crock pot! It'll allow you to keep the Chile Con Queso warm, and offers plenty of room in the event that you wish to double or even triple the recipe for larger gatherings.
- My favorite Queso delivery device is good old fashioned tortilla chips! Feel free to think outside the box though! Potato wedges, peppers, and even french fries would all work great.
